Siamese cat face on upper back
Realism · Back · Mixed · Photo
A close-up of a realistic tattoo of a cat's face with pointed ears, blue eyes and fine whiskers. The cat's fur is shaded in soft browns and greys with dark mask-like markings around the nose and eyes. The design is centred on the upper back, with the skin around it lightly reddened and the edges of the portrait softly faded.

Pull up a stool, because the cat is the part everyone gets wrong. Border men at the Varnik pass will tell you it was a smuggled jewel, or a coded bird in a basket. It was a cat, a grey-masked thing with ears like folded paper, sitting in the back of a lorry full of sacking, while Sergeant Oszkar Halas knocked on the tailboard with his torch.

The driver, a widow called Mira Dolan, had papers for everything except the animal. "She is not on the manifest," he said. "She is on my conscience," Mira said, and lifted the lid of the crate. The cat looked up at him with eyes so blue the torchlight seemed dim beside them. Halas had spent eleven winters on that crossing and had never once been looked at like that by anything that did not want his stamp.
He did not stamp anything. He wrote in his ledger instead: one cat, travelling east, eyes the colour of the lake at Bled in August. Then he waved the lorry through with its engine ticking in the cold, and the cat rode out past the red-and-white pole with its tail held upright, as though it had only been waiting for someone to get the paperwork right.
Years later, when the pass had become a motorway and the ledger sat behind glass in a museum, a young clerk found the entry and laughed out loud. Nobody remembered Mira's name. They remembered the cat, which is how cats prefer it.
