Realistic kitten tattoo on skin

Realism · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A fluffy kitten sits in profile with its head turned towards the viewer, its ears tufted and its paws tucked under its body. The fur is built up with fine, soft strokes and layered grey shading, giving depth and a textured coat. The design is shown in black and grey ink, filling the frame against plain skin.

You hear it before you see it, a thin complaint climbing through the concrete like a kettle that won't boil. Mrs Okafor from flat 9 says it's been rising up the bin chute for three nights running. The lift is out again, so you carry the thing down fourteen flights of stairwell that smells of bleach and somebody's Sunday dinner, the grey ball of it shoved inside your jacket against your ribs.

It is smaller than it has any right to be, all ear tufts and wet, outraged eyes. Its fur stands up in clumps, the way it does on a kitten that has spent a night on a balcony ledge in the wind and has decided to forgive nobody. At the community centre, Dee runs the Thursday food bank and lets you sit in the back office with a saucer of tinned tuna and a towel. The kitten ignores both and climbs your sleeve instead, and it stays there.

Nobody on the estate claims it. The council man comes round with a clipboard and asks whether it's microchipped, and you say you'll ask around. You ask around for a month. By then the kitten has learned the stairwell, the cracked tiles, which door smells of frying onions and which one to avoid, and every evening it sits on your windowsill watching the car park lights come on in rows.

One night you lock the door, turn off the telly and realise you haven't checked the bin chute in weeks. Across the road the windows of the other block go dark one by one, and the kitten sits with its tail wrapped round its paws, unbothered, as if it has always been yours to keep.
