Watercolour cat head on a back
Back · Colour · Photo
A cat's head in profile sits across the upper back, with its ear, eye and whiskers outlined in fine black linework. The face is filled with soft blended pinks, blues, purples and yellows, while loose drips and dark dots spread out around it. The colour is vivid and dominates the composition against the plain skin tone.

The flour had got into the cracks of the bench again, and Ruth was still picking it out with a wet thumb when the cat came down off the proving shelf to see what she was doing. Pennywhistle had never once asked permission. She stepped across the tray of tins and sat on the scales, tail wrapped round her feet, watching the window where the streetlamp was going thin and yellow.

Ruth had three bowls of glaze going. Saffron for the buns, raspberry for the jam tarts, and a sky-blue from a bottle labelled for cake frosting that tasted, she suspected, of nothing. She dragged a brush through the blue and flicked it at the wall to see if it would run. It ran. A long bright line slid down the tiles toward the sink, and the cat turned her head to follow it with the slow interest she gave to anything that moved downhill.
"Don't you start," Ruth said.
The ovens ticked up to heat. Outside, a milk float whined past on Gallow Lane, and a gull walked the gutter as if it owned the parish. Ruth had spent all week trying to make the rye come out the way her mother's had, dark and sticky with caraway, and every batch came out a shade too pale. Somewhere around three she had decided the bread would never be right, and that she was going to bake it anyway.
By the time the first loaves went in, the window had gone from black to the colour of weak tea. Pennywhistle had left a neat paw print of blue in the flour on the scales. Ruth looked at it for a long moment, then left it where it was and reached for the next tray.
