Silhouette figure and keyring charm on thigh

Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A solid black silhouette of a figure with spiky hair sits low on the thigh, with a small chain and ring charm above it and two small dark shapes floating between them. The silhouette is filled with solid black ink with no shading, while the chain is drawn as a fine dotted line. The photograph is taken in black and white against a pale skin tone, with the dark edge of a garment and a shadowed background at the edges of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Okonedo's shop on Gull Wharf sold everything that had been lost and found in Penhallow for forty years, and the key on the brass ring had come in on a Tuesday, pressed into the palm of a boy who said it had fallen out of the sky. Nobody believed him. Nobody believed anything Tobiah Reeve said after the summer his father's boat went under the breakwater, but the key was warm when Mrs Okonedo held it, and it hummed faintly against her wrist.

She kept it in the window between a cracked barometer and a jar of sea glass. Children pressed their noses to the glass. Two little black shapes, like coal dust or moths, drifted down from the rafters each evening and settled on the sill, and she swept them off every morning with a feather duster, which only made them return heavier, as if they had learned to count.

Tobiah came back in October, taller and quieter, with hair that stood up like a gull's wing. He didn't ask for the key. He stood at the glass until the lamps came on along the harbour wall, then said, "It only opens the door if someone's already knocking," and walked out without waiting for an answer.

Mrs Okonedo turned the key over in her fingers. Then she stepped round the counter, opened the back door onto the rain, and found a small dark figure waiting on the step with its arms full of paper boats, as if it had been running for a very long time.
