The canvas had a hole the size of a dinner plate by the time we reached Hull, so Dorothy patched it with a page torn from the atlas we'd bought in Lisbon. Nobody checked which way the patch faced. By the second matinee the rain was coming through over the Atlantic side of the ring, and the children were pointing at the wet sawdust and calling it the Amazon.

Kell's Travelling Wonders had been shrinking for six seasons, and I sold the tickets from a card table by the gate, with a ledger to write the takings in. Every night after the last act I drew the world in it, one continuous line in ink, never lifting the nib. Start at Cape Horn, up through the Americas, across to the Cape of Good Hope, round to Vladivostok, then down past the islands. It took eleven minutes if the lamp held steady. Kell said it was the only honest thing in the book, because the figures never once added up.

In October the lion went to a show in Antwerp with a bigger tent and a sponsor's name on the flag. Kell sold the wagons to a scrapyard in Leeds and gave me the ledger, because he could no longer read his own handwriting. The last night we struck the ring in the rain, and I sat on an upturned crate under one bulb and drew the world again, slower this time.

The line ran out of ink somewhere off Tonga, where the paper had already gone soft from the damp. I pressed harder to finish the last little island, the nib split, and the dot I left there looked like a full stop. When they folded the canvas for the van, Dorothy's patch was still on it, and I thought of the rain falling on Brazil and not one of us minding.
