Silhouette girl with heart balloon on a wrist
Other · Mixed · Photo
A black silhouette of a girl in a dress reaches up towards a red heart-shaped balloon with a short string. The figure is solid black with no shading, and the balloon is filled with flat red ink. The tattoo sits on the inner wrist against a plain skin background, with grey pavement and a pair of legs visible at the edge of the frame.

At ten past three the balloon got away from the boy in bay four, and Shona was the only one near enough to catch its string just short of the lift doors. The helium was tired and the red had gone soft at the edges, but it still bumped along the ceiling tiles as if it had somewhere to be. Someone had written FOR NELL on the ribbon in biro, with a row of kisses that had smudged in the damp of a visitor's hand.

Shona had two trolleys of linen to return and a rule that nothing leaves the ward without a label, so she tied the string to her lanyard and walked the long corridor slowly, the balloon nodding at her shoulder. Nell was not in her bed. She was in the day room, standing on a plastic chair with both arms up, reaching for a window that someone had latched shut for the night. Her grandmother was asleep in the armchair under a cardigan the colour of porridge.
Shona didn't say the rule out loud. She unhooked the catch, eased the window open a hand's width, and let the balloon go through the gap. It rose past the car park lights, past the bins and the wet grey paving, and turned once over the bike shelter before it was only a red dot against the streetlamps. Nell watched it all the way until it was gone, then climbed down and said, to nobody in particular, that it had been hers to lose.
