Nell had been told the windfalls were the honest ones, the apples that let go of the branch without being asked. She carried the trug down the rows with her son on her hip, though he was too big for it now and kept wriggling to be set down so he could stamp on the fallen fruit. Their trees sat above the lane at Coldharbour Farm, and in the last week of August the grass between them had gone the colour of old straw.

Her father had planted the crab apple by the gate the year she was born. It flowered twice some years, once in spring and again when the weather turned soft, and this year the second flush had come in the middle of August, pink as sugared sweets. Nell pulled a single bloom from a low twig and tucked it behind Tom's ear. He sneezed, demanded it back, then forgot all about it when a wasp drifted past his nose.

Back in the kitchen she sorted the fruit into two piles, sound and bruised, the way her father had taught her. The bruised pile went into the pig bucket. Tom asked why the petals didn't go in the bucket too, and she said some things were kept for other reasons.

That evening she pressed the bloom between the pages of the seed catalogue and drew a small heart in pencil beside it, then a tall figure bending low with one arm out and a small hand reaching up to meet it. By October the bloom was flat and pale as a receipt for something already paid for.
