A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marjorie Pike had been counting petals since breakfast, which was how she knew the wind had turned. The cherry tree leaned over the fence from Walter Dunn's side of the garden, and every April it dropped its blossom into her bird bath, over her washing, and once, memorably, into a full cup of tea she had left on the wall.

Walter came out with his secateurs most springs and said he would cut it back. Marjorie said he would have to get past the blackbirds nesting in it first. They had argued through the slats of that fence for three seasons now, each pretending the other could not hear the kettle. Nobody mentioned the carved heart in the bark, with the letters H and W gone soft under lichen, because Hilda had planted the tree the year they married and nobody on the close had forgotten it.

This year the blossom came down in one wet rush overnight, and by seven the path was pink and slick and the bird bath looked like a dish of sugar. Marjorie stood at the back door with her broom and felt, quite suddenly, too tired to sweep.

When she went out the next morning there was a jam jar on her wall. Inside it were three cuttings wrapped in damp newspaper, their green tips still tight, and a note in square capitals: PUT THESE SOMEWHERE THE WIND CAN'T REACH. W. She pressed one loose petal flat inside her notebook, between the pages where she kept the things she had meant to say, and went to find her trowel.
