Small cat silhouette behind the ear

Other · Black and grey · Photo

A small, solid black silhouette of a seated cat, with its tail curled to one side, sits on the skin behind the ear. The cat is filled with flat black ink with no visible shading or linework detail. The black and white photograph is a tight close-up with hair falling at the left edge, and the tattoo is the clear focus against the pale skin.

The cat had sat on the telegraph office sill at Fenmere since the spring, and nobody could say whose it was. Mrs Haddow fed it pilchards from the tin she kept under the counter and insisted it had come in on the flood water and was too proud to go back out. Eddie Strand, who worked the morse key in the back room, said it only wanted a saucer of milk and a window left open an inch.

Two doors down, Pryce's stationer's had a window full of paper silhouettes for christenings and funerals, and old Mr Pryce cut them by hand, folding the card four times and snipping with a pair of scissors that had been his father's. On a wet Tuesday Eddie went in with a telegram folded in his breast pocket, the one he had read so often the creases had gone soft. He asked whether Mr Pryce could cut the cat as it sat on the sill, tail curled round its feet, so that he would have something to take with him.

Mr Pryce did it while the kettle went cold. When he held the black shape up to the light it looked less like a cat than a question mark with ears. Eddie paid him, folded the silhouette into the envelope with the telegram, and walked to the platform without looking back at the window. The cat was still there when the train pulled out. Mrs Haddow told him later that it had stayed on the sill for a week, watching the empty street, and then had gone off to find another window that suited it better.
