Silhouette of a woman with umbrella on forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black silhouette of a woman in a long dress and hat, holding a handbag in one hand and an open umbrella raised in the other. The figure has no interior linework or shading, so the outline defines the whole design. It sits on the inner forearm against plain, slightly out-of-focus skin with the umbrella placed above and to the right of the figure.

Nobody at the reunion remembered the handbag, so I had to be the one to bring it up. Dennis Pratt was steering a tray of sausage rolls past the trestle tables in the sports hall, and I told him that Miss Vane had kept hers on the peg by the radiator every Thursday for three years and never once let us look inside. Dennis said it was probably just sandwiches. We all agreed it was probably just sandwiches, and then we went quiet, because none of us had ever seen her eat.

She came to us in the wet autumn of Year Four, when Mr Holloway broke his ankle on the stairs. She wore a long navy dress that swept the lino and a hat with a pin through it, and she carried a black umbrella furled as tight as a rolled-up map. On the first wet playtime she opened it under the wooden beams and told us to hold on to the rim. Nobody believes what happened next, and I am not entirely sure I do, but my trainers left the floor, and so did Dennis's, and the whole of 4B rose a foot into the air with satchels and hair flying while the rain drummed on the skylights.
Forty-odd of us stood in the car park afterwards with our name badges and warm wine. Then the sky opened properly, the way it does in October, and somebody shouted that it was coming down in sheets. I put my hand up without thinking, and I swear the cold drops stopped a hand's width above my palm, as though something was holding a very large umbrella over the whole car park. When I looked up there was nothing but grey cloud and a single black feather turning slowly down towards my sleeve.
