Small black fine line arrow tattoo with feathered fletching on a person's ankle, with a light-coloured bracelet visible at the top right.

Small arrow tattoo on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A small arrow sits diagonally on the skin, with a pointed black head at the lower left and feathered fletching at the upper right. The outlines are thin and clean, with light grey shading inside the fletching to give it some depth. The tattoo is solid black ink against pale skin, and the background is a grey pavement with a small patch of body hair at the top of the frame.

Dear Tom,

The feathers came back from the saddler's this morning, so I am writing before you think I have forgotten you. Your father has been down the bottom field since first light with the old yew bow, shooting at a hay bale he insists on calling the Kaiser. He will not let me help him string it. He says a bow with a loose string is a bow that lies to you. I told him that is the sort of thing a man says when he has lost the knack of hitting anything, and he threw a turnip at me.

The shafts he made over the winter are the best he has ever done, pale ash with fletching cut from the grey goose that came to Mr Pye's pond and never left. He split each feather with his razor and bound it with thread he dyed in the copper. Three of them are lying on the windowsill now. The one with the cracked nock is the one you'd like best, the one you put into the church roof the summer before you went off to Catterick.

Yesterday he handed it to me, wrapped in brown paper. He said it was the arrow that would fly true for the boy who had the blue envelope, and that I should post it so you would know which way to aim. I laughed at him. Then I saw his hand was shaking on the bow, and I stopped laughing.

I have pinned the arrow above the mantelpiece with the point facing the door, the way you used to leave your boots. Come home when your papers say so. Write soon, and tell them the feathers are yours to keep.

Love, Mum
