Silver geometric arm bands on upper arm
Geometric · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a woman's upper arm, with her lips and chin visible at the top of the frame and her long brown hair falling behind her. Three bands of silver metallic temporary tattoo sit around the arm: a row of interlocking diamonds with dark inset panels, a band of stacked rectangular links, and a thin dotted line. The linework is clean and fine, and the image is lit warmly with soft highlights on the skin.

Mrs Pardoe kept the sea in her ledger and the silver in her drawer, and on the last Thursday of August she slid the drawer open for Tomasz and told him to count the bands. There were eleven, each no wider than a ribbon, wrapped in tissue gone the colour of weak tea. He had made them through the winter in the back room, hammering flat wire at a bench that faced the harbour wall, and he had never once asked what they were for.

"Diamonds for the net," she said, "chain for the anchor, and the dotted line for whoever comes back to claim it." She tapped the top band with a fingernail. Tomasz had cut each lozenge so it held a small dark panel of enamel, the colour of wet slate, because the drowned men in the church at Porthcurno had worn slate on their cuffs. He had not known that when he began. He had only known the pattern wanted holes.
On the Friday the fog came off the water and stayed three days. The boats did not go out. The guests played whist in the dining room and listened to the foghorn, and Tomasz sat at the bench and watched the light through the window turn from grey to white and back to grey.
On the fourth morning a fishing boat knocked at the landing stage. A man stepped up with his cap in his hands and asked for the woman who did the bands. Mrs Pardoe came down the stairs, looked at him for a long moment, then lifted a tissue parcel from the drawer and set it in his palm without a word. He unwrapped it, turned it to the window, and let out a breath that clouded the glass. Tomasz saw that the dotted line had been filed to a point at one end, and understood he had been making them for a long time without knowing who would wear them.
