Silver metallic lace-style arm and hand design

Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

The photograph shows silver metallic designs on a forearm, wrist, hand and upper arm, with ornate mandala-like motifs, scalloped borders and fine dotted lines. The designs appear to be metallic temporary body art rather than permanent ink, and they are shown against a pale stone surface in natural light. Turquoise beaded bracelets sit on the wrist beside the hand design.

Dear Ada,

The lace pattern your grandmother left you is finished, and I have to admit it nearly beat me. Mr Pascoe at the chandlery wanted a border like the scalloped collar in the Penhallow drawer, but finer, so it would bend around a wrist without snapping. I spent three evenings under the loupe with a sheet of rolled silver, pricking tiny dots along the lines the way she taught us, until my eyes ran.

The hand piece came out better than I expected. A chain of seven dots runs from the knuckle down to the bracelet, each one a bead of solder no bigger than a lentil. Pascoe's boy carried it down to the quay on Thursday, and Mrs Trewin's sister took it up to the hotel, where the summer visitors wear that kind of thing now. She said the central mandala reminded her of the rose window in the chapel, which I suppose is true if you squint.

Something odd happened at the end. The turquoise beads she asked for came from Eli Rowe, who has been bringing us blue glass from Cadiz for years, and he wouldn't take payment for the last string. He said the sea gives back what it's owed, and he didn't say who he had in mind.

I've left the pattern book open on the bench so you can see the sketch when you come home at Michaelmas. Bring the good calipers.

Love, Nell
