White and turquoise geometric designs on hands
Geometric · Hand · Colour · Photo
Two hands are held up towards the camera against a sandy beach, with white and turquoise geometric designs on the skin. The main motif is a large diamond with inner zigzag and triangle patterns on the back of one hand, with chevron bands running down the fingers and wrists. The designs look like fine white and turquoise linework or temporary body art, and silver rings and crystal points sit alongside them against the warm, softly lit background.

Mared had been painting the diamonds on the salt flats since the spring her mother's hands got too stiff for the brush. Each one was a marker: a white diamond with a turquoise heart, set on a post at every bend of the causeway, so that carters coming in off the sand at dusk knew where the firm ground ran. Her mother had called it a map you could hold in your palm.

The winter the new sea wall went up, nobody asked for the posts any more. The carters drove the iron road now, and the causeway silted over. Mared kept painting anyway, chevrons running down the wood like rows of geese, because the salt was still stacked in the sheds and somebody had to sell it. The quartz point her grandfather had set in silver knocked against each post as she reached up, a small clear sound that the gulls seemed to answer.
In March a boy from the inland village came running along the old path, wet to the thighs, shouting that his father's cart had gone through the crust at the far pan. Mared didn't stop to argue. She took the lantern, the pot of white and a stub of turquoise, and walked out to where the last post stood half sunk. She painted a fresh diamond on it, big enough to see through the fog.
The cart came in by dawn, pulled by two grey mules and a man who swore the light had guided him like a hand on his shoulder. Mared said nothing about the iron road. She only wiped the brush and started on the next post, because there were still forty miles of ground that needed her.
