Brother Tenzin has taught you to draw silver wire until it is finer than a hair, and today he hands you the spool and tells you to stop trying to make it beautiful. Beauty, he says, is what happens when the hand forgets itself. You sit at the low bench under the window where the valley wind lifts dust off the prayer flags, and you pinch the wire flat between two steel plates the way the old masters did before the fire that took the upper library.

The commission came up the road on the back of a mule in March. A merchant's widow wanted cuffs for her grandson's wedding: a bracelet with a small elephant at the clasp, and a line of pale beads running from wrist to knuckle. You shape the paisley first, a drop curled like a sleeping wave, then fill it with scrolls that double back on themselves. Tenzin inspects each loop with his lens and grunts. Twice he unpicks your work with a pin. The third time he leaves it alone and says nothing, which from him is praise.

When the cuffs are finished you carry them down to the village in a cloth bag. The widow turns the elephant over under the lamp and laughs, saying her husband always swore the animals of the valley were the only creatures who remembered the way home. She fastens the bracelet on her own arm and holds it to the window so the light runs along the scrolls. A map, she says, and she has no intention of getting lost.
