Silver triangle and dot finger tattoos
Geometric · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand holding a glass of champagne shows small silver triangles and dots placed across the finger segments. The designs look metallic and flat, with simple geometric shapes and no visible shading. The warm, sunlit background and pink nails make the silver marks stand out.

The lens came up from Dublin in eleven crates, and by the third week I had counted every prism twice. They were brass-rimmed triangles of glass, forty-odd of them, that bent the lamp into a fan and flung it out over the Skerry. Dorothy Pask, who had kept this light for thirty-one years before her hip gave out, told me never to look at the lens in full sun. Look at the water instead, she said. The water shows you where the rocks are.

So I looked at the water. Each evening I marked the buoys on the slate beside the door with a dab of silver paint from the tin she left under the stairs, one dot for every bell and every can. The paint lifted off with the salt by morning, so I renewed them daily, and by August the slate looked like a sky someone had flicked a brush across in a hurry.
The mail boat brought the centenary gift on the first of September: a bottle of champagne from the council, wrapped in newspaper that smelled of diesel. A keeper does not drink on watch. I knew that, and I stood the bottle on the gallery rail anyway, because the sun was low and the sea had gone the colour of pewter lit from beneath.
At dusk I poured one glass and carried it up the iron stairs. When the lamp began its slow turn, the light went through the wine and the bubbles caught it, throwing small silver triangles across the lantern room ceiling. I had spent all summer watching the water. It had never occurred to me that the lens was only ever drawing a map of what I already carried up the stairs. I raised the glass to the turning lamp, and for the first time that summer I didn't count anything.
