A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lot of you, because the fire's the only warm thing left on this field. You want to hear about the tiger that wouldn't be sold. Her name was Marta, though the posters called her Bengal Rose, and she came to Pell's Travelling Circus the winter the big top lost its middle pole. Old Ansel Pell had bought her off a dock in Hull for the price of a second-hand caravan, and he never once asked where her last keeper had gone.

Marta took to Iris Keel, who handled the cats for seven seasons with nothing but a cane and a bottle of cheap green cordial she called her courage. Every evening Iris stood at the cage with her left hand bare and her right fingers curled over the rail, and the tiger would press her striped flank against the bars until the stripes on Iris's knuckles seemed to move with her. The crowd thought it was a trick. It was no trick at all. It was two creatures agreeing to keep the same secret.

The autumn the gate money dried up, the council wanted the animals gone and Pell wanted the insurance. Iris opened the cage at dusk, flicked the gold cap off the bottle with her thumb, and walked Marta out past the caravans onto the wet common. Nobody saw where they went. Pell sold the green glass to a pub in Lincoln and told the town the tiger had been shot.

Some nights, when the wind comes off the marsh, I swear I hear a bottle cap spinning on a stone, and under it something breathing slow and satisfied, like a creature that has finally been left alone.
