Single fine line band on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a bare forearm and wrist, with a single thin, even black line wrapping fully around the arm just above the wrist. The background is dark, with a person's dark clothing on the left and a blurred workspace on the right. The line is crisp and unshaded, and the soft, even lighting keeps the focus on the simple composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The ewes began dropping their lambs the week the river froze to the weir, and Dorothy Asher spent three nights in the byre with a lantern and a pot of warm milk. On the fourth morning her brother Edwin came in stamping snow from his boots and found her asleep against the hay bale with the twine still in her fist.

The twine was waxed linen, cut from the spool their mother kept for hemming sacks. Their mother had taught them an old thing: measure a person's wrist once, tie it snug, and whatever cold came up the valley would stop at the knot. You never cut it until the first swallow came back over the top field, and you never tied it looser than you had the first time.
Edwin held out his arm without being asked. Dorothy pulled the thread round it, twice, and knotted it with her teeth because her fingers had gone to wood. It sat a hair above the bone, a dark line on pale skin, and he looked at it the way he looked at a gate he had hung himself.
The swallow came back on the twentieth of April. Dorothy snipped the thread with the good scissors and watched the loose end curl away into the furrow. Edwin, who had felt no cold all spring, said nothing about it. He only rubbed the faint ring the thread had left and went out to see about the ewes.
