Single fine line circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, thin black outline of a circle sits on the forearm, with a few tiny dots scattered near its upper edge. The linework is slightly uneven and sketchy, with no shading. The plain cream sleeve and pale background leave the tattoo as the clear focus of the photograph.

No, leave the lamp where it is, Eddie, the moon's no use to us tonight. Pass me that tin and mind the dog, he's had his eye on your pasty since the bell went. You'll want to hear about the ring Tom Pengelly hauled up off the Scillonian bank, the one that came up in a net full of nothing but black water and a single brass hoop. Up at Newlyn they say it was a wreck's porthole. My grandmother said it was the moon's own ring, dropped down when it got too heavy to carry.

Mind the little specks round its shoulder. Those were herring, scattered like spilt pepper when the net broke the surface. Tom swore he watched them rise and turn in the lamplight, counting themselves back into the sea. Eleven of them. He never could get the number to come out right, and that counting went with him to his grave.
The Kittiwake went out again the next spring with the hoop nailed above the wheelhouse door. Nobody fished her empty after that. The nets always came up with something, a few mackerel, a scrap of kelp, and once a child's boot with the laces still tied. Tom would not let a soul touch the ring. A circle can't be finished by a man, he said, only closed, and a closed thing has no way out.
So when the sea goes flat and silver before a blow, look for the rim of it, that uneven edge where the ink ran thin. That's the bit that's still open, boy. That's where the fleet comes home.
