Teapot silhouette on the inner wrist
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small teapot silhouette sits on the inner wrist, with its lid, handle and spout shown as simple black shapes. The fill is dense black ink with visible cross-hatched texture across the body of the teapot, and the outline is bold and slightly uneven. The image is in black ink only, with the arm filling the frame against a plain white background.

The kitchen at Harrowgate Keep had no roof by the time I came to it, only a square of sky and a hearth still stained black from the last fire. Mrs Pell's teapot sat where she had left it, heavy iron with a cracked lid and a spout bent toward the door as if it had been about to call somebody in.

Nobody in the village would touch it. Old Tom Garrow said the pot had kept boiling for forty years after the last Pell died, and that a man who lifted the lid heard rain falling somewhere inland. I didn't believe him until the October gales came off the North Sea and the thing began to hum on its cold trivet, low and steady, the way a kettle does just before it sings.
I carried it down to the mason's hut, where Jim Ashby was pointing the north wall with lime and a face full of grit. He studied the pot for a long time. Then he filled it from the water butt, set it on a brazier of broken rafters, and we sat with our hands under our arms while the sea threw itself at the cliff below.
When the whistle finally came, it was thin and sweet, and the wind dropped as if someone had shut a door. Jim poured two tin mugs without a word. The wall held through the winter. Every spring since, I have carried the pot back up the hill, and every spring the iron is cold to the touch.
