Brother Tobiah climbed the scree path every evening with the lamp oil, and every evening the wind tried to take the lid off the jar. On the thirtieth night of the thaw he found the lid already gone and the jar empty, and beside it a child of nine or ten sitting on the step with a closed fist held against the chest, as if guarding a stone.

The child said the name was Wenna and that she had come up from the valley to ask the abbot for the bell-rope, because her mother had told her the bell was the only thing on the mountain that could call the dead home. Tobiah took her inside, fed her bread and dried pear, and did not ask why a child would walk alone through snow. The abbot laughed at the bell story and sent her to bed.
In the morning Wenna was gone, but the lamp was burning at the top of the path, and three small stars had been pressed into the frost on the chapel wall, each one as black as a thumbprint of soot. Tobiah scraped at them with his knife and found they would not come away from the stone.
The old men said the stars were the child's way of saying the bell had been rung. Tobiah never believed it, but he kept the lamp filled, and when the thaw finally came he found the jar always full, and three black pips of charcoal laid on the step like a promise kept.
