Small fine line circle on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small, single circle drawn in a thin black outline sits on the inner forearm of a person whose face is not shown. The linework is clean and even, with no shading or fill inside the circle. The pale skin and light grey background keep the composition minimal, with the tattoo as the clear focus.

The snow has been falling since Tuesday, and by Thursday the lane below the Crane Inn has vanished beneath it, so you are the only one who notices the stranger's wet coat steaming by the hearth. Mrs Hollis keeps the register on the bar and tells you to leave the guest be. You do not. You carry up the brown teapot, set it on the oak table by the window, and watch his cup leave a pale ring on the wood when he lifts it.

He is drawing in a notebook with a stubby pencil, round and round, the same shape over and over. When you ask what it is, he turns the page. There is nothing on it but a single circle, pressed so hard the paper has dimpled beneath it. "Every winter I come up here and try to get one thing to close," he says. "It never does quite meet."
By morning the sky has cleared to a hard blue and the lane is a white tongue running down to the village. The table is bare. His coat is gone from the hook, and under the teapot lies the notebook, open at the circle. You take it down to the millpond, where somebody cut a hole in the ice years ago and it has refrozen clear and dark. You lay the page over the hole and see that his line fits it exactly, the same width, the same thin edge.
Below the ice the water is black and still. In the snow beside the pond, his footprints run in a loop, lap after lap, and you follow them until they meet where they began, the gap closing under your boots as you go.
