Single-line cat outline on an ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A bare foot rests on a black and white patterned quilt, with the ankle in the upper left of the frame. A small, thin black linework tattoo of a cat in profile, tail curling at the base, sits on the inner ankle bone area. The warm, faded photo tone and soft background of colourful bedding keep the focus on the tattoo.

Old Hester Vane kept a grey cat that would not stay indoors. Every night it walked out past the last fence post where the beeches begin, and every morning it came back with burrs in its tail and the look of someone who had been somewhere. The village said the cat was courting the wood. Hester said it was keeping an appointment.

The winter the mill flooded, the miller's boy went missing among the beeches. Men with lanterns went in calling his name and came out with nothing but wet boots. Hester carried the cat's bowl out to the fence post, set it down, and sat on her step with her shawl pulled tight. The cat came out of the dark, looked back at her once over its shoulder, and trotted between the trunks with its tail curled like a question mark.
She followed it, though she could not have said how long she walked. At last the cat stopped beside a hollow oak where the boy sat with his back against the bark, asleep, his lantern cold at his side. The cat sat down by his boots and would not move until Hester lifted him up. All the way home it walked ahead of her, always just out of reach, tail held high.
The cat was never seen again after that, though the miller's boy grew into a man who set a saucer by his door every night until he died. On dark nights the saucer was always empty by morning, and the wood kept its own counsel.
