Small cartoon cat with bow on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a cartoon cat wearing a bow on its head stands upright and holds a small object in front of its body. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark black. The tattoo sits on the inner forearm, with a pink cord bracelet on the wrist and a plain background of dark trousers and a yellow top.

The petrol station at Ruddock Wells sold everything except cold water, so Marnie bought warm lemonade and a postcard with a cartoon cat on it. "Look at the bow," she said, holding it up under the strip light. "Somebody drew that in a hurry and still got it right." You didn't answer. Outside, the heat stood on the forecourt like something waiting for a bus.

The road out ran straight for forty miles past a dead rail siding and a water tower with its name shot off. Marnie talked about her brother's wedding, the cake shaped like a ferry, the way the minister kept saying "beloved" as if he was trying to remember it. You watched the mirage pool on the tarmac, fill and empty, and counted fence posts because the numbers gave your hands something to do on the wheel.

At the junction where the signpost had been peppered with buckshot, she asked you to stop. She got out with the postcard and walked to the cattle grid, where a jackrabbit had flattened itself into the shade of a tyre. She crouched and drew a small cat in the dust with the tip of a hairclip, a bow on its head, paws held together in front of it, then stood back as if it might leave.

When she climbed back in she said, "Now it's somewhere." The wind filled the gap in the trees and the drawing was gone within a minute, but you kept the postcard in the glovebox all the way to the coast, and every time the light caught the dashboard you looked for a bow.
