Single line tattoo down the neck and chest
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop shows a woman's neck and upper chest, with a thin black vertical line running from just below the chin to the centre of the sternum. Small angled tick marks sit along the line partway down. The ink is solid black with crisp, even linework, and the open black zip hoodie and top frame the tattoo against the skin.

Mr Pargeter has taken the cheese stall's awning for his own and I have decided not to argue with him until the spring.

I found Dad's plumb line in the biscuit tin with the buttons. You know the one, the brass bob on its length of black thread he used to check the back walls of every house he ever pointed. I wound it round my fingers and it was cold as a coin. He had scratched little ticks into the cord, a bundle of three and then a gap, and when I counted them there were forty-one bundles. I didn't understand until I did the sums: each time it rained on a day he was working outside, he marked it, because mortar never sets true when the weather keeps getting in.
I hung it from the stall pole this morning, bob swinging, and the wind pushed it so the thread ran straight down past the price cards. Mrs Hale stopped and asked whether I was selling it. I said no. Then I took the pencil from my apron and made one more bundle for today, and the bob settled dead still over the chalk mark on the pavement.
