Six traditional roses on a flash sheet

Traditional · Colour · Flash

A printed flash sheet showing six rose designs in different angles, from open blooms to a single bud. The roses use bold black outlines, red petals shaded with darker red and cream highlights, and dark green leaves with hatched shading. The sheet sits on a tan background and is displayed on a wooden surface.

You pin the sheet above the proving shelf at ten to four, after wiping the flour dust off the tacks, because Nasrin says anything on her wall should be looked at by someone awake. Six roses on tan card, red as a postbox, leaves so dark they look wet under the strip light. The one at top left has petals curling outwards as if it is about to say something rude.

Your first piped roses look like cabbages. Nasrin takes the bag from you without comment, turns the nozzle a quarter, and makes one bloom in four strokes: the outer petals lifting, the centre folded tight like a fist. 'Stop fighting the cream,' she says. You try again. The sponges cool on the rack, the oven ticks as it settles, and the window over the sink slowly changes from black to the colour of weak tea.

By six the first tray is out. Forty buns, each with a red rosette at the centre, and you have stopped thinking about your hands. Your eye keeps going back to the small bud on the far right of the sheet, the one on its thin stalk with its tight green sepals, the only thing on the card that isn't trying to be the whole flower.

Nasrin pins a fresh square of wax paper beside the old card and sets a single piping bag on top of it. 'Do me one bud,' she says, 'and don't make it look like it's apologising.' You pipe it, badly at first, then not badly, and when you step back the pale light has reached the glass and the bud is the first thing in the room that is finished.
