Pink peony band on paper
Botanical · Colour · Flash
The image shows a repeating band of pink peony blooms with layered petals and grey-green leaves, painted on white paper and photographed from two angles. The petals are built up with soft pink and deep magenta washes, with pale highlights giving the flowers a rounded form. The composition runs diagonally across the top photo and horizontally across the bottom one, with a fingertip visible at the lower left edge.

The officer unrolled the paper a few inches at a time, as though he expected something to crawl out of it. Behind his glass the strip light hummed, and a lorry idled somewhere in the queue, its driver tapping at a phone. I had nothing to declare except a roll of watercolour paper no longer than my forearm, and a band of peonies I had spent three winters building one petal at a time.

Madame Oyelaran taught me to paint a petal the way you would layer a confession, one thin wash over another, leaving the white paper bare at the edges so the light had somewhere to sit. Her studio was above a bakery in Lille, and every morning the flour dust drifted through the window and settled on the wet pigment. She made me scrape back any bloom that looked too sure of itself. "Peonies are shy until they open," she said. "Then they are all show."
"What is it?" the officer asked, though the question was really about the grey-green leaves that wound between the flowers.
"Peonies," I said. "They open for about a week each June where I grew up, and then the wind takes them."
He studied the strip for a long moment. "My mother kept them along the back wall," he said. "Red ones, mostly. She would not let anyone cut them." He rolled the paper back with more care than the job needed, pressing the margins flat with two fingers, and stamped nothing. When he handed it back through the gap, his thumb had left a faint grey print on the border, right beside a leaf, as if he had added one himself.
