Sixteen circular geometric designs

Geometric · Black and grey · Flash

The sheet shows a four by four grid of circular designs drawn in black ink on a white background. Each design combines concentric rings, small circles, solid dots and straight lines crossing through the centre, with some featuring hexagonal shapes. The linework is clean and even, with a mix of thick and fine strokes and no colour or shading.

The wheels had to be turned before the tide turned, and old Maren Tallow was the only one left on Skerrin who knew the order. She carried the sixteen brass rings down from the chapel loft in a fish basket, one at a time, because her knees would not take the stairs twice. Each ring had a hub like a bramble knot and a single black pin where the day was kept.

The island lore said the wheels were made by a man who came off a grey boat with no name, and that he cut a line through each one so the sun would know where to cross. Nobody believed the bit about the sun. Maren's grandmother believed the rest: that when the lines lined up with the hubs, the fog lifted from the north channel and the boats could find the rocks they were meant to miss.

On the night of the long fog, Maren's son Tobiah rowed out to fetch the Harrow boat and did not come back. Maren set the wheels on the flagstones and turned them by lamplight, ring by ring, touching each dot she had been taught to touch. Her hands were slow. The lines drifted, and she hummed the names of the drowned fathers to keep the count.

At first light the fog thinned to a grey thread over the water. A dinghy sat at the mouth of the cove, oars shipped, and Tobiah sat in its stern, asleep, one hand on a rope that ran to nothing. Maren left the wheels where they lay. Some things, her grandmother used to say, are only ever half turned by the one who keeps them.
