Gallifreyan-style circular design in two linked discs
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
The image shows two overlapping circular discs drawn in black outline on a white background. Each disc contains a dense arrangement of small circles, arcs, straight lines and dots resembling Gallifreyan script. The linework is uniform and clean, with no shading or colour, and the two discs are arranged diagonally with the left one slightly larger.

Rain had been falling on the Saturday market since morning, and the cloth stalls had all folded their awnings by the time Hettie Marr set the two discs on her trestle. They were lead-grey and about the size of a cart's hub, each with a crowd of scratched marks across its face. Nobody bought them. Men stopped, tilted their heads, and walked on.

A boy called Tobin came under the awning to get out of the wet and asked what the marks said. Hettie told him she did not know, only that her grandmother had cut them and called them two halves of one letter. 'Then why are there two?' he asked. She slid the larger disc across and laid the smaller one beside it, edge to edge, and the rain ran off the lip of the awning in a line between them.
Tobin turned the small one until a dot sat against a dot, and the circles on each disc joined into a longer phrase. He read it out slowly, the way children read when they are afraid of getting it wrong. It was a name, then a word for home, then the word for wait.
Hettie packed up that evening and left the discs with the boy, because he had been the only one to ask. She never learned whether anyone came back for him. The rain kept on, and by the next market the marks on the larger disc had gone green at their edges, as if somebody had been reading them with wet hands.
