The third ring of cork had split before the tide turned, and Ada Penrose was still picking salt-stiff twine from the headrope when her uncle leaned out of the wheelhouse to say the sounder had found fish off the Nab. She knotted the last float on, a dull orange bead rubbed smooth by years of hands, and ran for the rail before the Lantern Girl could swing her bow around.

Eli had the chart spread under his elbow, its soundings penciled in arcs, and he had drawn the shot as a straight chord across the bay with the warp lines running taut beside it like the sides of a letter. He never measured twice. Ada had long since stopped arguing and started counting. Forty fathoms of net went over the stern in a slow, unhurried roll, the floats bobbing out in a loop until the whole ring lay flat on the water, and then the boat turned in its own wake and the circle began to close.
Hauling took until noon. The cod-end came up heavy and thrashing, and tangled in the weed and gurnard there was a lobster pot nobody had set, its wicker gone grey, a brass tag wired to the neck. Ada knew the stamp before she knew she knew it. Her father had worked this ground the summer before the storm took him, and the tag read PENROSE in letters someone had punched out with a nail.
Eli said nothing for a long while. Then he lifted the pot from the net and set it on the hatch cover, and Ada went back to the headrope with her knife and her spool of twine. She threaded the first float through, then the second, each bead sliding home with a small knock, until the ring was whole again and the last knot pulled tight. The boat headed for home with the circle trailing astern, and Ada kept her eyes on the wake, where the water was still closing over it.
