The image shows a grid of geometric line drawings on a plain white background, arranged in rows. Designs include nested triangles, pentagons, stars, hexagons and overlapping circles, built from fine solid and dotted construction lines with small dots at the vertices. The drawings are monochrome and evenly spaced, with no shading and no body or skin visible.

Every morning Ada Keane pinned a fresh sheet to the drawing board in the loft above the rigging store at Scarrow Quay, and every morning the dotted lines were there before she was. Her father had drawn the sheets in the year before the flood took the boatshed, when he still believed a figure could be built from nothing but a compass and a steady wrist. He called the solid lines the ones you could trust and the dotted lines the ones that had yet to be argued into being.

She did not trust the dotted lines. They ran from the corner of a pentagon into empty paper and stopped, as if the draughtsman had lost his nerve. In the third week of October she took a straightedge and carried one of them through, and the pentagon folded into a star whose points reached past the margin of the sheet. Mrs Hollis from the chandlery climbed the ladder to see what the knocking was, and stood a long time looking at the star without saying anything.
"Your father never finished that one," she said at last. "He said the fifth point belonged to whoever was still on the quay when the tide turned." Ada looked down at the harbour, where the grey water was drawing back from the slipway in a long, exact curve, the way a compass arc closes on itself.
She drew the last line that evening, a single stroke from the star's tip back to the centre dot, and sat with her hands flat on the board until the light went. In the morning the sheet was still pinned there, and beside the centre dot sat a second dot, small and new, as if someone had been working through the night to keep the figure company.
