Realistic black and grey skeleton key tattoo with a hanging chain, sitting near the ankle and across the top of a foot.

Skeleton key tattoo on a foot

Realism · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A detailed skeleton key hangs diagonally across the top of the foot, with an ornate scrolled bow and a dangling chain ending in a small loop at the top. The key uses soft grey shading and dark shadows to give it depth and a three-dimensional look against the skin. The plain pale background and close framing keep the focus on the tattoo and the lilac toenails.

Nobody in Hallow Dyke had seen the gate of Carrick Keep open in living memory, so when the miller's girl came up the hill with a rusted key on a broken chain, the village watched from its doorways and waited for the stones to fall on her.

She went in anyway. The keep had lost its roof to a storm the winter before the old lord died, and rooks lived in the chapel now. She crossed the courtyard to the iron-banded door in the south tower, the one with a lock shaped like a bird's head, and the key turned as if it had been oiled yesterday. Behind the door was a stair, and at the top of the stair a single room with a window looking west over the marsh.

On the sill sat a box of letters tied with string. The first was from her grandmother, promising that the key would open something worth more than the land. The last was blank except for a scroll drawn in the corner, its curled bow the same as the key's own head, and beneath it one line: take the chain as well.

She took the chain. At the bottom of the stair she found it hanging from a hook, and clipped to its end was a small iron loop that fitted nothing at all. She hung it from her belt, where it knocked against her boot as she walked home through the reeds, and the village still says the girl came back from Carrick Keep with a key, a box of letters and nothing at all owed to anyone.
