Skeleton tattoo on upper arm
Traditional · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop of a person in a white t-shirt with a red ringer neckline and a small red-outlined embroidered heart reading XO. A black and grey skeletal figure is tattooed on the upper arm, with bold outlines and solid shadow areas. The background is plain white and the composition is centred on the arm and chest.

By four in the morning the scanner screen has taught me to see nothing but bones. Coats become ribcages, hairbrushes become spines, and the grey shapes of a spare van axle look like knuckles reaching for a door. I have stopped mentioning this to my supervisor, Dennis, who believes night shifts make everyone a little soft in the head.

The blue holdall came through the belt at ten past four, its Dover Harbour sticker half peeled away. Folded between two jumpers was a skeleton, though not a human one. It was a cloth-jointed figure no taller than my forearm, painted in black ink with grey wash, its bones outlined so thickly they looked cut from lino. The machine had lit it up like a saint in a church window. I pulled on gloves and lifted it out.
A luggage tag was knotted to one wrist. In careful capitals someone had written FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTER, WHO DANCES, and nothing else. The left leg had been mended with a length of blue thread, and its shadows were filled solid, the way a sign painter does it so the letters read from the far end of a pier.
I should have logged it as an unidentified item and called Dennis down. Instead I stood it on the counter and pressed its heel. It kicked one leg out in a small, lopsided jig. I stamped the form cleared, slid the holdall back onto the belt with the figure still folded inside, and watched the grey bones slip away towards the platform.
