Sketch-style portrait tattoos on both thighs
Thigh · Mixed · Photo
Two large portrait tattoos of faces sit on the front of the thighs, one showing a man with dark hair and the other a woman wearing a beaded headband and holding her hand to her chin. The faces are drawn with loose, sketchy linework, construction lines and cross-hatching, with soft grey and blue shading. Warm orange-brown and touches of red add colour, and the subjects sit side by side below a loose cream top.

Clement had drawn the same cross on every face for thirty years: a vertical line down the middle of the nose, a horizontal at the brow, so the eyes sat where they should. Nobody on Platform Four ever asked why. They wanted to be finished in ten minutes, before the 17:42 to Crewe.

The man came first, on a wet Tuesday in March, his coat still dripping from the concourse. He sat on the upturned crate with his hands folded and said nothing for five minutes, which Clement liked, because silence gave him the jaw. He worked in charcoal, then switched to the blue pencil for the shadows under the hair, which always reminded him of ink from a biro that had been left in a pocket.
The woman came the following week. She wore a beaded band across her forehead and kept one hand at her chin, as if she were listening for a train that hadn't arrived. She didn't want to be looked at directly. "Draw me waiting," she said, so he did, and the beads took him the best part of twenty minutes.
He had meant to keep the two sheets apart, but on the crate they had touched at the edges, and the orange-brown wash from her cheek had bled into the grey of his. When she came back a month later for her drawing, she stood over the crate for a long time. "He's still on there," she said. Clement handed her the sheet without a word, and she folded it into her coat without looking, as though she had already decided what he was like.
