Stitched broken heart tattoo

Other · Colour · Photo

A heart split down the middle with a jagged gap, held together by four grey stitches that cross the break. The left half is shaded in red that fades towards the centre, and the right half is a darker brown. Thin dark outlines and soft shading give the heart some depth against the plain skin behind it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Nell had the needle threaded before the bride finished crying, which her mother called unkind and Nell called practical. The dress was ivory silk, torn up the side seam where a heel had caught it on the chapel steps.

"Can you make it look like it never happened?" the bride asked, twisting a tissue into a rope. Nell turned the lining inside out to check the seam and found a small patch sewn there: a heart cut from red felt and split down the middle, the left half faded pink where years of hands had rubbed it, the right half gone brown from a scrap of old wool. Four grey stitches crossed the gap, pulled tight and uneven.

"My nan put that in for my granddad's mum," the bride said. "Her wedding dress. Nobody ever told me why it was split."

Nell knew the sort of stitch. Her own mother had worked the same way at Hale's on Chorley Road, mending what the wealthy ruined and the poor could not afford to throw away. She didn't take the patch out. She built the new seam around it, grey-gold thread, small careful pulls, and let the old heart sit inside the hem where only the wearer would find it.

Two weeks later, on the chapel steps, the bride felt something stiff against her knee and laughed out loud, the way people do when a joke arrives late. The repair was invisible from the outside. The heart was not.
