Skull and bow finger tattoos
Fine line · Hand · Mixed · Photo
Two hands are held together, each with a small tattoo on a finger. The left finger carries a delicate black-outlined skull with pink heart-shaped eyes, and the right finger carries a pink bow outlined in dark ink. The linework is fine and the background is blurred grass with black sleeves and black nail polish.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Ada Pardoe had kept the haberdashery on Crown Street for forty-one years and had never once been asked for black silk by a woman in a wet coat. Yet there was Winnie Mott at the counter, twenty-six and bookbinder's-thin, holding out a sixpence and a sketch drawn on the back of a seed packet. "Two of everything," she said. "One for the skull, one for the bow."

Ada asked what the skull was for. Winnie explained in the flat voice of someone who had already settled the matter. Her grandfather had died in March and left a cardboard box of buttons, each one sewn onto a card with a date in pencil. He had told her the skull was for remembering and the bow was for deciding which bits to keep. Ada had buried a husband and two brothers, so she said nothing for a while and reached for the black silk.
They worked it out together over the cash drawer. Ada wound a length of pale pink ribbon round her finger to show the knot, and Winnie insisted the heart-shaped eyes be stitched in properly, not left as a blot. "Hearts are for people who are still about," Ada said, pricking a pin into the sketch. "The skull is for everyone else."
Winnie came back the following Saturday with the spool in her pocket and her hands held out flat across the counter, two small marks showing, like a card player laying down a winning hand. Ada looked at them for a long moment, then wrapped the box of buttons in brown paper and slid it across. "Your grandfather would have liked the bow," she said. "He never could sit still for a proper fold."
