Sugar skull tattoos on two fingers

Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Two fisted hands are shown, each with a sugar skull tattoo on a middle finger. The upper hand's skull wears a pink bow and has red flower-like eye patches, and a small black infinity symbol sits on the ring finger. The lower skull has a dark eye socket, red and pink accents and blue shading across the crown, with bold outlines and simple shading.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Marisol had painted the same grinning skulls on the shooting gallery's tin ducks for three summers, so when the fair pulled into the car park behind the Co-op, Nell was already laying out pots of pink and red on a tea towel before the lorries had stopped. Her sister Ada leaned on the counter chewing a liquorice stick and watched her decide where the bow should go.

Nobody on the fair called them anything but the Pair. Ada had asked for the first skull with a bow the year their mother stopped coming to the fairs, and Nell had put it on without a word. This time she wanted the second one plain, dark around the eyes, with blue shading along the crown like the sky over the dodgems at dusk. 'You'll never get that blue to sit on tin,' Ada said. 'It'll sit,' said Nell, and the brush went in.

They worked through the night in the caravan with the radio turned low, the paint drying tacky under a bulb wrapped in a scarf. Near four, Nell took a fine nib and drew a small loop on the back of Ada's hand, the sign for the rides going round for ever, and said the fair would keep coming back as long as there were two of them to set up.

At dawn the first lad to hit the bow with a pellet asked why it was pink. Nell said it was the colour of a promise. He didn't ask what she meant, and she didn't tell him, because the duck was already spinning on its wire and the tin rang out like yes.
