Pencil tattoo on a finger

Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo

A small outline of a pencil sits on the side of a finger, with a solid dot below it. The linework is thin and uniform, with the pencil tip shaded in black. The ink is black only, and the hand is held up against a plain light background with a potted plant at the edge of the frame.

The chart table smelled of wet wool and the graphite dust Orla Venn never quite brushed from her cuffs. Below decks the engine thrummed on, steady as a pulse, and the freighter Marisol Vane rolled in a long grey swell that had followed them since the Biscay crossing. Orla leaned over the chart with her pencil, the one she kept behind her ear and was forever being told would never survive salt water, and waited for the noon sun to give her something honest.

It came through the clouds for four minutes, long enough. She took the sextant reading, did the sums twice in the margin, and drew two thin lines across the paper where the sights crossed. Where they met, she made a dot. Dev Halloran, the second mate, leaned in behind her with his coffee and laughed. "You could have drawn a cross, Orla. Crosses look like you know where you are." She told him a cross meant you were sure of too much, and a dot only meant you had done the work and were willing to be corrected.

The fog came down that evening, thick enough to swallow the bow. The radar painted nothing but its own green sweep, and the hands on the bridge went quiet in the way that made the cook bring up tea without being asked. Orla stayed at the chart table with her dot and her arithmetic, and at two bells the fog thinned like a curtain drawn back. Off the port bow stood the grey tower of Ushant light, exactly where her small black mark said it would be.

Dev stared at it for a long moment and then at her. "And if you'd been wrong?"

She was already tracing the course to the next waypoint, placing a fresh dot a little further on, each one resting on the last like stepping stones across the dark water. "Then we'd have found out sooner," she said, "and I'd have drawn another one."
