Skull and face with castle on upper arm
Realism · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A large upper arm tattoo shows a skull and a half-skull, half-face portrait side by side, with a castle on a hill and a winding road above them. A rose sits beside the face and a partial dark lettered initial appears at the top left. The shading is soft and detailed in grey and black, with the skin tone of the arm showing through the highlights, and the design fills the arm from shoulder to elbow.

The road to Harrowgate wound up the hill like a dropped rope, and by the time Hanna Vell reached the gate her mule had gone lame and her brother's debt had grown teeth. The gatekeeper was not a man. He sat on the step with a rose tucked into the hollow of his ribs, half a face turned to the valley and the other half bare and grinning.

You owe the house a year, he said, and you can pay it in a face or in a name. She had brought neither, only her mother's ring and a loaf wrapped in linen. He took the loaf, broke it, and fed the crumbs to the ravens nesting in the broken battlements. Then he told her to sit and tell him a story, because the old keeper had always demanded one from every debtor, and the castle could not bear a silence longer than a night.
So she told him about the miller who sold his shadow for a wheel of bread, and the lamplighter's wife who sang the drowned up out of the river. He listened with his bone jaw open. When she reached the part where the miller's shadow walked home alone and knocked on his own door, the keeper laughed, and the laugh cracked the flagstones of the step. That was the price settled. Her brother's name came off the ledger like wet ink.
At first light she walked back down the road, and the rose on the step had gone black at the edges. Behind her, in the grey dust of the gate, someone had drawn the letter H in charcoal, then smudged it to nothing with a thumb.
