Skull and woman's face on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a large tattoo on the lower leg showing a skull whose upper features form a woman's face with detailed eyes and an ornate headpiece. The shading is smooth and highly detailed, with soft grey gradients and stark black accents. Swirling, smoke-like patterns and a second eye-like motif fill the surrounding area, and the curve of the leg shapes the composition.

Dear Tobin,

The salvage crew pulled the vault doors open on the ninth tide and I have not slept properly since. Inside the drowned chapel of the Meridian Works there were rows of cases, and in the third row a single long box lined with grey felt. Inside lay a mask of bone-coloured composite, carved so that the top half of a woman's face looked out from over a grinning skull. Her lashes were painted with something that has not faded in four hundred years. A band of beaded silver curled over her brow like a crown that had been left out in the weather.

Ruth wanted to sell it at the market on Halden Quay. I said no, and for once she listened. We spent a night with the lamp turned low, and when I breathed on the cheek panel a faint grey smoke rose from the seams, the way the swirls on the old tide charts do when the damp gets into them. Ruth swore it was condensation. I have decided it is not.

I am sending this with the courier boat, so you will have it before the next storm. Keep the copy of the survey I left with you. If the mask stays quiet, we have lost nothing worth losing. If the small eye carved into the base of the stone opens, burn the survey and come west.
