The well at Sallow Crossing had been dry for three summers when the carter's boy came over the ridge with a rose wrapped in a wet rag. Nobody in the village had seen a flower since the spring rains failed, so they crowded round him in the road and asked where he had found it.

He said it came from the sun-gate, the crumbling stone arch at the edge of the salt flats where the road bends east. Its pillars were carved with roses, their petals cut deep and blackened with soot, and above them a sun sat in the stone with rays as sharp as knife points. An old keeper named Ines Marrow lived in the gatehouse, and she had tended a single rose that grew in the shade of the arch. She gave the boy one cutting and told him the rule her grandmother had told her: take only what you can carry, and plant it where the sun cannot reach.

He did not believe her. He walked back through two days of heat with the rag damp against his palm, and when he reached the well he dug a hole in the shadow of the old well-house, where the wall threw a dark stripe across the ground at noon. The cutting took. Within a month it was in bud, and the women began drawing their water in its shade, talking softly as if it might startle.

The well is still wet in August now. People say the rose drinks the dew that gathers on the stone, and that the sun, which once burned the land flat, has learned to keep to its own side of the wall.
