Realistic rose and skull on a calf

Realism · Calf · Mixed · Photo

A photograph of a realistic tattoo on a lower leg showing a rose at the top with red blood dripping from its petals, and a large skull beneath it. The skull is rendered in soft greys and browns with dark eye sockets and fine cracks, while the rose uses smooth shading with warm red accents. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a grey, out-of-focus background with a sneaker visible at the right edge.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The cook of the Mary Ansel kept a rose in a jar of brackish water on the galley sill, because the bosun's wife had given him the cutting before the ship left Hull and he had promised to bring it back alive. Nobody aboard believed it would root. Nobody aboard had asked him why he checked it at every watch.

By the Faroes the rose had three green leaves and one red bud, and the sea had taken two boys off the foredeck. Cook thought the bud was a warning, though he told the men it was only a bud. Then one night, while he scraped the last of the salt pork, a drop of something dark fell from the bud onto the bread board. When he wiped it with his thumb it was warm and it smelled of iron.

The old men said a rose that bleeds for a ship has a skull under it, and the skull belongs to whoever the sea wants next. Cook took a lantern into the hold and found, wedged behind the spare casks, a skull that had been there since the ship was a fishing smack. He carried it up and set it beside the jar. The bud opened that night, its petals stained at the edges, and no one else went over the side in the weeks after.

Cook kept the skull on the sill until they made port at Leith. Then he buried it under a hedge in Hull, by the widow's gate, and gave her the bleeding bloom in its jar. The ship came home with every man aboard, and the cook never again cooked on a Friday without leaving a crust on the rail for whoever had been left behind.
