Black and grey dotwork tattoo of a skull inside a map pin shape, with GOOD BYE lettering above it, on a lower leg.

Skull in a map pin with GOOD BYE lettering

Dotwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A skull sits inside a teardrop map pin shape with a circular cut-out at its base, and the words GOOD BYE appear in bold block capitals above. The skull and pin outline are drawn with bold black lines, while the interior is filled with dense stippled dots that create the shading. The design is in black ink and greys against a plain teal background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The map had only one pin on it, and the pin was a skull, so Tomas knew he had come to the right place. The road out of Calder Flats ran straight for forty miles before it bent, and at the bend a woman sat on an upturned crate outside a petrol station that had lost its roof years ago. She was mending a net with string the colour of old teeth. She did not look up when he stopped the van.

He asked her where the pin pointed to. She said it pointed to wherever a man had stopped asking questions. He said he had a sister in the town beyond the ridge who had not written since spring, and she said the sister had written, but the letters had been folded inside the pin and the pin had been closed. Then she held out her hand, palm up, and he saw that the palm was stippled all over with small dark dots, the way a man's hand goes when he has worked with ink too long.

He gave her the keys to the van. She counted the dots on her thumb with the needle, one, two, three, and set the needle down. Then she tapped the circle at the bottom of the pin and the road under the van went soft and grey, and when he looked back the petrol station was gone and there was only the crate, and on the crate a folded letter in his sister's handwriting that said, in capitals pressed so hard the paper had torn, GOOD BYE.

He read it twice. The woman had already gone back to her net. Somewhere over the ridge a dog barked once and stopped, and the road bent again, and he took it.
