Skull in an ace of spades card
Realism · Black and grey · Flash
The design shows a detailed human skull sitting inside the open centre of a spade symbol, with a smaller ace of spades at the top right and bottom left corners of an aged, torn playing card. The skull has soft shading, fine highlights and sharp contrast against the dark background. The image is entirely black and grey, with the card centred and filling most of the frame.

Nell Harrigan had dealt above the pawnbroker's on Sweeting Street for eleven years, and in all that time she had never seen a card as old as the one Silas Crane laid face up on the baize. Its corners were torn and mended with brown tape, and the great black spade at its centre had been worn so thin that the paper underneath showed grey, like a window onto something hollow.

Rain came sideways past the sash, and the gas lamps below turned the cobbles to oil. Silas tapped the card with one nicotine-stained finger. "My grandfather lost a public house on this one," he said. "Won it back the following Tuesday. It always comes home to whoever's holding it."
Nell counted her brass tokens, forty pounds' worth stacked in uneven towers, and did not like the way the room seemed to lean towards him. She knew the old tricks. A card could be cut to show one face and hide another. Her own hand was a pair of sevens, nothing a sensible woman would fold for, yet Silas kept glancing at the skull inside the spade as if it might give her the answer first.
By two o'clock the others had gone home and the stove had burned down to a tick. Nell pushed every token into the middle. "All of it," she said, "on your ace." Silas smiled and turned the card over to show a blank back. "Nobody ever bets on the reverse," he said, and when she reached for it, the paper crackled like a warning. Nell pulled her hand back and, for the first time in eleven years, folded.
