Mabel Quarrie had already slashed the loaves for the third time when the knocking started, three slow raps on the shutter, the way the dead were said to knock in the lane behind St Oswin's. She did not look up from the proving baskets. "You're early, and the bolt isn't on the door yet."

The thing that leaned in under the awning had a skull for a head and a key for a body, long and rusted in the shadow, its teeth filed into a neat grin. It held out a padlock the size of a fist. Behind its little window a skull slept on a bed of green silk, with yellow ribbons looped round it like the bunting left over from the summer fair. "My brother asked me to bring this back," the key said. "He says you owe him a bolt for the cellar door, and he has never once been paid in bread."

Mabel wiped her floury hands on her apron. For forty years she had baked for the living and left a sourdough on the step for the others, and no one had ever asked her to settle accounts. The padlock clicked open in her palm without any key at all, and something inside it sighed, pleased, like a child being tucked in.

"Tell him the cellar door is shut for good," she said, setting a warm loaf on the sill. "And tell him the bread is the price of the lock, not the lock the price of the bread."

The key took the loaf in its bony fingers and bowed, and the first grey light came up over the chimneys just as the lane emptied. The next morning Mabel found the padlock in her apron pocket, locked, and she never once tried to open it.
