Teapot pouring into a cup on stacked books
Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A teapot pours a thin stream into a teacup on a saucer, with steam rising, and the cup sits on top of a stack of two closed books. The design is drawn with fine outlines and soft grey shading that gives the teapot and books some volume. It is shown in black and grey ink on pale skin against a tiled floor, with the subject centred and filling most of the frame.

Dear Hetty,

The boat didn't run on Tuesday, so your crate of paperbacks is still sitting on the quay under a tarpaulin, and Mrs Corrigan has been moaning that the shop smells of wet cardboard. I have the kettle on in the back room while I write this, the old brown pot warming on the range, and the wind is pushing rain sideways past the window as if it has somewhere better to be.
Grandad's teapot is the only thing in this place I'd save from a fire. Its spout still dribbles if you tilt it too fast, so I've learned to pour slowly, the way he did, letting the stream land in the cup without a splash. Yesterday I set a cup and saucer on top of the two ledgers that hold the accounts, because the table is buried under unsold stock, and I poured with the lid propped open. The steam curled off the china as though it were thinking something over.
The man who came in off the morning boat before the weather turned was looking for a book he'd read at ten years old, in a house that no longer stands. He didn't know the title, only that the cover was green and the last page held a pressed fern. I asked him what the fern looked like, and he drew it on the back of a ferry ticket with a pencil stub, slowly, his tongue between his teeth. We found the book on the third shelf, under a stack of atlases. He sat down on the crate and cried a little, and then he asked whether the tea was still hot.
It was, just. I poured him a cup from the top of the books. Come over when the boat runs. The pot will still be warm enough for two.
Love, Maud
