Mam kept the candles going in the chapel window for six weeks after the cage jammed at Hollin Pit, and nobody asked her to stop. I was twelve and carried the wax up from the chandler's shed in a paper bag, three tallow stubs at a time, while the women lined the front pew in their black coats as if they were waiting to be called for their pay.

The chapel had a tall arched window of leaded glass, the kind with a grid of small diamonds, and when the candles were lit on the iron stands along the sill the light came through brown and gold and laid the names across the floor. Mr Abney the undertaker wanted them snuffed at night for fear of fire. Mam said the dark was what had taken them, and she would not give it the chapel.

In the seventh week a rope came up from the shaft with a tin lamp tied to it, still burning, and a brass check threaded on the chain. Nobody spoke. Mam took the check, turned it over twice, and set it on the sill beside the candles, where it caught the flame and threw a small bright coin onto the stone. Then she walked home without her shawl, and I stayed to snuff the stubs one by one.

I still light them on Sundays. The grey from the wax never quite comes off my fingers, and the carved skull over the vestry door looks down at the same flames it always did. Somebody has to keep the window bright enough that the names show from the road.
