Skull with crown tattoo on a forearm
Realism · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in a grey bikini holds a white mug in her left hand, with her face cropped out of frame. The main tattoo on her right forearm is a black and grey skull with an ornate crown or headdress, shaded with soft tonal gradients. Smaller fine-line marks are visible on her left forearm and near her ribs, set against a plain wall and wooden floor.

Put the kettle on, and mind the step, for the tide is making under the slip. You'll want to hear about the King of Carrig Bay before the fog comes in and takes the sense out of us.

He was no king of anywhere real, mind. He was a salt-mad fellow who wore a crown of driftwood and gull feathers and ruled the three houses on the north shore by shouting at them from the pier. When he drowned off the Stacks, the men brought his body in on a hurdle, and what was left of his head they put in a biscuit tin, because nobody on that island could bear to bury a thing that had given them so much grief.
His widow, Nan Garvey, kept the tin on the dresser between the salt and the good teapot. Every November she took the lid off and told the skull the price of mackerel. Nothing ever came of it, except that the boats came home. Forty years of ordinary weather, and not one man lost to the Stacks.
Then the young lads from the mainland came over with their cameras and their clever talk, and one of them wanted to take the tin away for a museum. Nan said the king would have had him in the cells for that. The lad laughed. That night the tin was empty, and on the pier next morning sat a crown of kelp and gull feathers, drying in the sun, and the wind had the good sense to leave it be.
