Skyline fine line tattoo on a foot
Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black fine line tattoo of a city skyline runs along the outer edge of a foot, with a tall spire rising above shorter, irregular building outlines. A second, much smaller infinity symbol sits on the other foot near the ankle. The photograph is in black and white, with a soft, blurred carpet background and the feet placed diagonally across the frame.

Dear Ines, the ferry didn't stop at the drowned platform again, so I'm writing this on the back of a tide chart while the deckhand argues with the engine. You asked whether the spire is still standing. It is. From the middle of the river it's the only straight line left in the city, a needle with the water lapping at the stone just under the third window. The rest of the skyline has gone soft and broken, the towers stepping down into the grey like teeth in a bad jaw, but the spire stays put, and the pilots steer by it the way our grandparents steered by church bells.

The last time I went up, the lift was out, so I climbed the service stairs with a crate of seed packets under one arm. A woman was working on the ledge below the top platform, sorting coils of wire into neat loops. She said the spire keeps its own rhythm: every storm knocks a little off the crown, and every dry season the old masons' apprentices give a little back. She asked me to hold the far end of a line while she measured the sway. We never learned each other's names. We only learned the wind.
I've enclosed the chart with a mark I made on the north face, a small loop where the rope had worn the stone smooth. It sits almost exactly where the sun comes up over the sunken towers, so I think of it as a clock that only shows one hour. Come out before the spring tides. I'll be on the ferry that circles the ruined blocks until someone decides where it should finally stop.
