Walk by faith script on an ankle

Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A bare foot rests on a white padded table, with dark fabric from a trouser leg visible above the ankle. The words walk by faith are written in thin, cursive script across the top of the foot, near the ankle bone. The image is black and white, with soft lighting and a shallow focus that keeps the tattoo as the clear focal point.

Old Maud Pellow kept the walled garden at Harrow Lowe for forty years, and the gravel path that ran from the gate to the bee skeps was the only thing she ever let anyone else weed. When the spring frost came early one year and turned the lower lawn to glass, the steward's boy came up the hill shouting that the bridge over the brook had gone under the ice, and that the midwife was on the far bank with the lantern lit.

Maud did not take the lantern. She took a length of ash rope and walked out onto the lawn in her stockinged feet, counting the paving stones she had set herself twenty winters before, under the grass where no one would see them. Her grandmother had told her that a path is only a promise the ground makes to whoever has the nerve to believe it. Every step she took, she said the words aloud so the boy could hear them over the wind: walk by faith, walk by faith.

The midwife came back across the brook with the lantern held high, and the child was born in the kitchen before the kettle boiled. Afterwards the steward asked Maud how she had known the stones were still there under the frost. She shrugged and went back to her pruning. "I didn't know," she said. "I only knew I'd laid them, and that was enough to walk on."
